Geneva LIVE: Polestar introduces second production model to rival Tesla Model 3

The Polestar 2 will enter production next year.

Polestar -- Volvo's high-performance, electric offshoot -- has revealed its second production model. Known simply as the Polestar 2, Polestar's newest model will make its public debut at next week's Geneva Motor Show.

Unlike the Polestar 1, which is a sporty coupe, the Polestar 2 uses a more practical five-door design. However, the Polestar 2 isn't a traditional hatchback. Instead, it's a segment-blurring fastback design that combines elements of a sedan and crossover.

Billed as the company's first volume model, Polestar says the Polestar 2 will compete directly with the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 2 will go into battle against the Model 3 armed with a 78 kWh battery that will provide 310 miles of range.

The Polestar 2 will come standard with an all-wheel drive electric drivetrain that's good for 408 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. Polestar says the Polestar 2 will be able to scoot from 0-60 in less than 5 seconds.

For those interested in a sportier driving experience, the Polestar 2 will be available with an optional Performance Pack that includes Oehlins dampers, Brembo brakes and 20-inch wheels.

The interior of the Polestar 2 is highlighted by an 11-inch touchscreen that runs an Android-based infotainment system. That means that Polestar 2 owners will have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps and a number of other vehicle-based apps.

Like the Polestar 1, the Polestar 2 will be available exclusively via an online ordering system. The initial launch edition of the Polestar 2 will cost $63,000 before any government incentives. Polestar will introduce a less expensive version of the car down the road. There will also eventually be a subscription program for the Polestar 2.

Production of the Polestar 2 is scheduled to kick off in China early next year.
