Volvo refreshes XC90, adds new KERS hybrid powertrain
With help from brake-by-wire tech, the KERS system is said to improve fuel efficiency by 15 percent.
Volvo has revealed a refreshed 2020 XC90, updating the flagship SUV with a new hybrid powertrain and several other minor enhancements.
The XC90's exterior features new wheels, different colors and a tweaked grille, while the interior can be configured with a wider range of seating configurations.
A kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) has been employed for a new hybrid option. Combined with brake-by-wire technology, the new powertrain is said to reduce fuel consumption by 15 percent. The KERS hybrid is identified by a new 'B' badge, with a choice between a B5 gasoline or diesel mild hybrid and a more powerful B6 gasoline configuration.
The T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid system, with up to 420 horsepower, has been upgraded with a new battery, brake-by-wire, and a new charging system. Range has increased by around 15 percent.
The smaller-capacity T6 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain has also been revised, increasing range by approximately 15 percent in the V60 estate and S60 sedan.
The 2020 XC90 is slated to begin production in May.
