Volvo threatens to keep Polestar 2 out of US market over tariffs

The company plans to build the EV solely in Geely's home market of China.

Volvo has cautioned that it may not sell the Polestar 2 in the US market despite heavy promotion to potential American buyers.

Speaking to Financial Times, Polestar chief Thomas Ingenlath warned that US tariffs on cars imported from China could derail the planned US launch for the Model 3 rival.

"The business case for bringing the car to the US is highly dependent on the type of tariffs we have," he said. "It wouldn't make sense to offer the car for a ridiculous price."

The company already announced an approximately $45,000 starting price in US showrooms, competing directly with the mid-range Model 3 configurations, though the Launch Edition starts at closer to $68,000.

Contradicting Ingenlath's comments, a Polestar spokesperson later told Jalopnik "The Polestar 2 is coming to the USA, and the pricing announced on February 27th includes the current tariffs." The wording does not exclude the possibility of a price increase if the Trump Administration rolls out higher penalties than the 'current' tariffs, however.
