Volvo to limit all new cars to 112 mph; says worth saving even 'one life'

The company views such restrictions as necessary to achieve its Vision 2020 zero-deaths goal.

Volvo has announced plans to implement speed limiters across its entire range of new vehicles starting next year.

All 2021-model-year cars will be restricted to a top speed of 112 mph, presumably including the company's most performance-focused packages.

The company bills the decision as a necessary element in achieving its Vision 2020 goal of no serious injuries or fatalities in its cars by the end of next year.

"Research by Volvo Cars has identified three remaining concerns for safety that constitute so-called 'gaps' in its ambition to completely end serious injuries and fatalities in its cars, with speeding a very prominent one," the company explained in its press release.

The automaker is also considering "smart speed control" that automatically limits speeds around schools and hospitals. The wording sounds similar to the regulations that have been proposed in Europe to prevent drivers from speeding beyond the posted limit across the continent.
