Ram hints at multi-function tailgate in Twitter war

We could see it at the Chicago auto show.

Ram will likely unveil a multi-function tailgate developed for one of its pickup trucks during the 2019 Chicago auto show. The company hinted at the new feature as it battled in a Twitter war with rival GMC.

GMC's official Twitter account posted a short video titled "the Rams already lost." It's a reference to the Super Bowl, in which the Los Angeles Rams will compete against the New England Patriots, but the video clearly shows the tailgate of a Ram 1500 before demonstrating the Sierra's more advanced six-way tailgate.

Shots fired. It didn't take long for Ram to reply.

"Flag on the play. False start. Check back with us on 2/7/19," the firm wrote. The date seemingly confirms Ram will have something tailgate-related to announce when it holds a press conference at the upcoming Chicago auto show.

It's an unconventional way to announce a new feature, but we like it. It's considerably more entertaining than a dark teaser image accompanied by a one-sentence description. We'll be live in Chicago to bring you full details about whatever Ram decides to unveil.

Clearly, the Ram hasn't lost the battle in the minds of truck buyers. In 2018, GMC sold 219,554 examples of the Sierra while Ram overtook the Chevrolet Silverado to end the year in second place overall with 536,980 sales.
