Eastern Europeans make Monster Passat 4x4

Eastern Europeans make Monster Passat 4x4

We don't even know how to begin categorizing this one. Volkswagen did offer an all-wheel-drive version of its third-generation B3 Passat back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but it never quite looked like this!

An Eastern European customizing outfit has apparently slapped a Passat wagon body on the frame of a UAZ 469, a Soviet-designed four-door Jeep-like military vehicle. Throw in a massive suspension lift - an easy task when you're dealing with a pair of solid axles and a quartet of coil springs - and a set of tractor tires and you've got the ultimate winter weather cruiser. Well, maybe we'd rather bomb down the Pennsylvania Turnpike in a standard Passat Syncro during a blinding snowstorm, but we can't really argue with the usefulness of this beast for crawling over sluggish traffic or scaring small children. Run! Monster Passat is coming!

Judging from the description - not to mention the rattly sound and black smoke coughs - the Passat retains its 1.9-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder powertrain and a five-speed manual transmission.
