Report: Smaller Alfa Romeo 4C to bow this summer

Following up its sensational 8C model, Alfa Romeo is reportedly readying a smaller - and more affordable model - version of its supercar to mark the brand's 100th birthday. Alfa Romeo will celebrate its centennial at the Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach this August.

While a follow up to the 8C will be no easy task, Alfa Romeo will reportedly unveil a new concept sports car at the Concours d'Elegance this summer. Indicating its smaller size, the new concept will likely wear the 4C nameplate.

"The 8C has been a very successful halo car," an Alfa insider revealed. "What we need next is a more affordable follow-up model that spreads the message over a wider customer base."

It remains unclear what platform the 4C will ride on, but the smaller sports car will retain most of the 8C's sensual lines and rear-drive layout. The 4C is tipped to receive its power from a turbocharged four-cylinder, developing 250 horsepower.

Coupe and convertible models are said to be in the works, with total production expected to be capped at about 5,000. Reflecting that limited availability, expect a price tag of about $70,000.

No word if the 4C will be sold in America, but the slick two-seater will at least have a shot. Alfa sold its 8C here, despite the absence of the Alfa Romeo brand in the United States. Moreover, Alfa could make a return to the U.S. market by 2012.
