GMC adds utility to Granite concept with CPU mini-pickup

GMC gets back to its truck roots - at least a little bit - with its Granite CPU mini truck concept vehicle.

GMC might bill itself as "professional grade," but the General Motors truck division's upcoming Granite urban runabout takes the brand in a new direction. To strengthen its "buff" image, GMC and GM's California design studio have unveiled an all-new small pickup concept.

Based on the front-wheel-drive Granite, which has only been shown in concept form, the Granite CPU - or Compact Pick Up - offers a little more utility than the boxy wagon model. A unique bed features side-access load doors that slide into the fenders, as well as a flexible rack system and a Dutch door-style tailgate.

Don't look for the Granite CPU to take the place of your GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup, but GM says the little runabout will be capable of carrying large-dimension loads as long as they're not too heavy. The Granite rides on a front-wheel-drive platform.

It's unlikely that the Granite CPU will preview a production model, although GM says it will evaluate the public's reception to the small 'ute.
