Infiniti to axe G25; EX and FX get 3.7L V6 for 2013

Infiniti will discontinue its entry-level G25 sedan later this year.

As the 2012 model year begins to draw to a close, Infiniti has announced a number of changes to its lineup for '13. These include a larger, more powerful standard engine for the EX and FX crossovers and the discontinuation of the G25 sedan.

First introduced for 2011 as an entry-level alternative to the G37, the G25 used a 2.5-liter V6 that produced 218-horsepower and returned 20/29 mpg. A too-short list of standard features and options (including the head-scratching lack of a navigation system) in addition to a price fairly close to that of the 328-horsepower G37 sedan may have spelled the G25's demise, though Infinti's line is that the car is being dropped in order to simplify the G lineup.

In any event, Infiniti will continue to offer the 2012 G25 through December.

The other big Infiniti news is that the EX and FX will get a 3.7-liter V6 in place of the current 3.5-liter unit. Whereas the old motor made 297 horsepower in the EX and 303 ponies in the FX, the 3.7-liter will produce 325 horsepower in both crossovers. The FX37 will be available in July, while the EX37 will launch in August.
