Mercedes-Benz details new G-Class' technology, luxury upgrades

Despite an interior inspired by the S-Class, the boxy SUV promises to retain its off-road prowess.

Mercedes-Benz has detailed a few of the next-generation G-Class' interior upgrades, creating a more modern and comfortable experience for drivers and passengers.

Engineers have achieved an even more spacious interior than the current model, with nearly six inches of additional rear legroom and improvements to shoulder width and elbow clearance for both the front and back seats.

Like the E- and S-Class, the instrument cluster and center console infotainment system switch to a pair of 12.3-inch configurable touchscreens with virtual instruments. Drivers can control the full digital interface without taking a hand off the wheel.

Buyers can choose from a wider range of interior materials including Lugano or Nappa leather, open-pore wood and diamond-pattern quilting, among other options.

"Schöckl" badges on the B-pillar hint at the SUV's off-road capabilities, validated at the local mountain near Daimler's Graz factory.

"Every G-Class must be put to the test on the Schöckl," the company says.

Full details will be announced in January at the Detroit auto show.
