Thor Trucks ET-One aims to take on Tesla Semi

The California-based startup promises to preempt Tesla with deliveries starting in 2019.

California-based startup Thor Trucks has revealed an all-electric semi that aims to take on Tesla's battery-powered cargo hauler.

The ET-One is a Class 8 tractor capable of towing 80,000 pounds, with up to 30 percent more power than diesel and range options up to 300 miles for short-haul and regional routes.

Like Tesla, Thor promises its electric powertrain can outmuscle diesel engines while reducing maintenance needs, per-mile cost and overall cost of ownership.

The startup suggests the ET-One was designed by fleet operators and truck drivers. The branding seems to take advantage of seemingly minor controversies sparked by the Tesla Semi, such as a need for traditional mirrors to complement camera feeds presented on dashboard displays.

The company intends to begin deliveries in 2019 with prices as low as $150,000. The claims will undoubtedly be met with skepticisim, however, in the wake of the Faraday Future fiasco and other bold EV announcements that fail to come to fruition.
