Boring Co tunnels to prioritize pedestrians, cyclists over cars

\"Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met,\" says Elon Musk. \"It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.\"

Elon Musk has shifted Boring Co's vision to avoid more trouble with anti-vehicle groups, promising to place top priority on transporting pedestrians before cars.

"Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met," Musk wrote on Twitter. "It's a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can't afford a car, they should go first."

The executive says an urban loop system would have thousands of small stations, each the size of a single parking spot, that would take riders very close to their destination and "blend seamlessly into the fabric of a city," rather than relying on a small number of large stations.

Musk initially promoted tunneling as an answer to the "soul destroying" traffic in Los Angeles. The Boring Co's initial videos focused on shuttling a Model S beneath city streets.

The revised vision does not exclude vehicles from the vision. If the company succeeds in building tunnels to scale, any prioritization between types of traffic will be essentially meaningless.
