Mazda3 recall addresses loose lug nuts

The company says drivers will hear a noise before the wheel falls off.

Mazda has launched a recall campaign for the 2019 Mazda3, affecting approximately 38,000 vehicles sold in the US market.

Some vehicles may be prone to wheel detachment if the lug nuts loosen. The nuts were torqued to the proper spec at the factory. Some of the hub assemblies left a gap between the stud head and the hub flange, however, allowing the lug nuts to loosen over time.

The issue should be audibly apparent to drivers before the nuts loosen far enough to allow the wheel to separate from the vehicle.

The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the defect, which will be addressed by retightening the lug nuts.
