NHTSA investigates Jaguar XF fuel leak recall

The agency has received dozens of complaints for powertrains that were not covered in the initial recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into a pair of Jaguar XF recalls.

The automaker had identified a problem with the fuel tank outlet flanges in 2010-2012 vehicles equipped with 5.0-liter engines. The defect could allow gasoline to leak, potentially leading to a fire.

The NHTSA has since received at least 30 complaints alleging fuel odor or leaks from vehicles with 4.2-liter engines, which were not covered in the original campaign, and vehicles with 5.0-liter engines that had been outfitted with a revised fuel outlet flange that was strengthened to avoid leaks.

The inquiry will presumably focus on the scope of the existing recalls and the effectiveness of the redesigned components.
