22 states join California in support of tougher emissions rules

Meanwhile, president Trump is pushing for laxer standards.

Governors from 23 states have joined forces to urge the Trump administration to put into place a set of nationwide emissions rules that require improvements every year.

The coalition of governors -- which includes states Trump won in 2016 -- released a joint-statement on Tuesday asking president Trump for a "common-sense approach” to deciding future vehicle emissions standards. Last year the Trump administration moved to rollback Obama-era emission regulations that require vehicles to improve fuel economy every year. Trump is also seeking to block a state's right to set their own air quality standards with regard to tailpipe emissions.

The group of governors, plus 17 major automakers, argue that Trump's proposed approach to emissions rules will cause a patchwork of standards across the U.S., costing automakers millions, if not billions, of dollars in the process. The governors also fear a cap on emission requirements will only speed climate change.

According to Bloomberg, both the EPA and the NHTSA are currently hashing out final rules that could be sent to the White House for review within the next few weeks.
