Police dashcam captures pilot's skillful emergency landing on busy road
The small airplane touches down gently and then stops obediently at a red light.
A small airplane pilot's impressive emergency landing on a busy street in a suburb near Tacoma, Washington.
The Washington State Patrol says the single-engine KR-2 aircraft experienced a fuel system malfunction, forcing the emergency landing on State Route 7 at 8:15am on Thursday morning.
Dashcam video from a police cruiser shows the airplane gliding down onto a gap between vehicles, eventually coming to a stop at an intersection. Trooper Thompson made a quick u-turn after noticing the low-flying aircraft in distress, activating his lights and "making room for the pilot to land safely," the WA State Patrol said.
The KR-2 is a relatively high-speed kit plane that weighs just 480 pounds empty, yet can cruise at up to 200 mph. The kit manufacturer lists the plane's aerodynamic stall speed at 52 mph and a stated minimum landing distance of 900 feet.
Luckily for the owner, the KR-2's wings can be detached to easily move the stranded aircraft from the parking lot where it was pushed by hand after coming to a stop.
