Stolen Toyota Camry detours onto beach to evade police [Video]

Unfortunately for the thief, the Camry was not well equipped to handle sand.

A car thief has been arrested near Los Angeles after leading police on a bizarre chase down a public beach near Playa del Rey in Los Angeles.

Videos show the Toyota Camry attempt to evade a handful of Ford Police Interceptor SUVs by turning onto Dockweiler Beach. Some beachgoers scatter to get out of the way, while others appear to be cheering as the car drove by.

The Camry driver kept a decent pace while cruising on the harder packed sand at the edge of the waterline. A concrete jetty eventually forced the car onto softer dry sand where it appeared to get stuck, however.

With no viable exit route on foot, the driver took a brief swim before being arrested.
