Audi R8 getting the bullet in 2020?

The R8 e-tron is allegedly dead, too.

Act fast if you want to put a brand-new Audi R8 in your garage. Audi Sport's range-topping model will not get a replacement when it reaches the end of its life cycle in about 2020, according to a recent report.

R8 sales are too low to justify spending money on a replacement, Automobile Magazine has learned. The company has also canceled the R8 e-tron, an on-again, off-again model powered by a zero-emissions drivetrain. Instead, Audi Sport will focus on more mainstream models.

Looking ahead, the company's product plan includes replacements for the RS 7, the RS 6, and the S8. It doesn't sound like we'll see the first-ever RS 8. As for the RS 6, it's too early to tell whether it will again be wagon-only (so, global market-only) or if it will also be offered as a sedan Audi can sell in the United States. We know there's a great deal of demand internally for a four-door RS 6 that can spawn a U.S.-spec sedan capable of giving the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 a run for their money.

When the R8 goes, Audi Sport's flagship model will be an SUV named RS Q8 that will be based on the upcoming Q8 we expect to see this year. The RS Q8 will share its 650-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 with the recently-unveiled Lamborghini Urus.

Finally, like we previously reported the line-up will grow with the addition of a battery-electric four-door fastback based on the Porsche Mission E.
