Audi Sport to launch electrified performance cars in 2020

Audi Sport promises to keep investing in its turbo engines, too.

Electrified Audi Sport models are right around the corner. We've heard about them through rumors for months but now they're officially part of the product plan.

"[The brand will see], from 2020 onwards, the start of the introduction of battery electric vehicles. This will start by the end of 2020, with the first car of Audi Sport, and then there will be more coming in the third decade of this millennium," company CEO Stephen Winkelmann told British magazine Autocar.

There's no word yet on how the company will adopt electrification. It could add a battery and an electric motor to one (or more) of its exiting models, or it could launch a standalone car.

Audi Sport's electrification push will include, presumably, both plug-in hybrid and 100% electric cars. That doesn't mean the brand will become electrified-only, however.

"Even if we keep in mind that electrification is important for us, legislators permitting, our turbo engines will stay because we are very proud of these," the executive added.

Formerly at the helm of Lamborghini, Winkelmann won't be around to see his brand dive into electrification. He will soon replace Wolfgang Dürheimer at the head of Bugatti.
