Electric Audi fastback in the works
The coupe-like four-door will use the Porsche Mission E\'s platform.
The brand-new second-generation Audi A7 will get an electric sibling in the coming years. The German company will expand its line-up with a battery-powered four-door coupe.
"We define ourselves very much through sportiness and motorsport, but also through vehicles like the upcoming... let's call it e-tron GT. It's a four-seater, a powerful electric vehicle with a breath-taking design," Peter Mertens, Audi's board member for development, told German magazine Auto, Motor Und Sport.
The magazine adds the e-tron GT -- a name which likely won't be retained on the production model -- will take the form of a four-door sedan with a coupe-like roof line. Its front end will borrow styling cues from some of Audi's recent concepts, including the e-tron quattro and the e-tron Sportback.
Reaping the rewards of economies of scale, Audi will build its upcoming four-door GT on a brand-specific version of the platform that will underpin the upcoming Porsche Mission E. Expect the basic version to offer 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and at least 300 miles of range from a lithium-ion battery pack mounted below the trunk floor. An 800-volt charging system will deliver 250 miles' worth of electricity in just 15 minutes.
Audi's e-tron GT will cost about 100,000 euros (roughly $117,000) when it goes on sale in 2022, meaning it will slot below the Mission E.
