BMW Group delivers 100,000 electrified vehicles in 2017

The i3 and i8 attract the most attention, while hybrid versions of traditional BMW models presumably dominate sales.

BMW Group is celebrating 100,000 'electrified' vehicle deliveries so far this year, achieving the benchmark a few weeks early.

"Since the introduction of the BMW i3 2013, we've delivered over 200,000 electrified cars to our customers and by 2025, we will offer 25 electrified models to our customers," says BMW chief Harald Krueger. Our early focus on electro-mobility has made this success possible - and electro-mobility will continue to be my measure for our future success."

The celebration focuses on the i3 and i8, but the first i-Series models still account for a small portion of BMW's overall sales. In the US, the company has sold just 5,604 examples of the i3 in the first 11 months of the year (down 18 percent) and just 408 i8 coupes (down 72 percent), representing less than two percent of overall group sales.

The 100,000 total is presumably dominated by hybrid versions of traditional BMW models. For the popular 3 Series, one in 10 vehicles were purchased with a hybrid powertrain this year. More than one in eight 2 Series Active Tourer buyers opted for a plug-in hybrid powertrain, while the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 accounts for one in 10 Countryman sales globally.

The German automaker has already secured naming rights to the i- through i9 and equivalent high-riding models, labeled the iX1 through iX9, to cover a broad expansion of new models in coming years.
