BMW halts sales of M cars to replace rear differential

The campaign affects 3,800 vehicles, according to a service bulletin.

BMW appears to have issued a sales halt for a handful of M cars and other models to replace the rear differential.

A service bulletin leaked by Bimmerpost and spotted by Autoblog suggests the suspect differential is used in the M2 Coupe, M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe and Convertible, M6 Coupe and Convertible, M5, 5 Series Sedan and the 6 Series Gran Coupe, Coupe and Convertible.

"These vehicles will require a replacement of the rear differential," the bulletin notes, without elaborating.

The issue is said to affect an estimated 3,800 vehicles produced from May 12 through July 4 this year.

It is unclear if the problem will be escalated to a safety recall for vehicles that are already in customer hands. Bimmerpost forum posts suggest BMW does not yet have a schedule for beginning repairs.
