SEMA 2017: Honda, Mopar to offer top engines as crate kitsby Drew Johnson
Two new crate engines are about to hit the market.
Two new crate engines will be unveiled this week at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, giving performance junkies two very different paths to forced induction.
For those that believe in small but mighty, Honda announced on Monday that it will soon offer the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder typically found under the hood of its Civic Type R sports car as an aftermarket crate engine. Featuring DOHC and i-VTEC technology, the 2.0L turbo is good for 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Unfortunately, those looking to replicate a Civic Type R with a custom build needn't apply. Honda says it will only sell the motor for "verified, closed-course racing applications” through its HPD Honda Racing Line program. Those that meet the requirements will be asked to hand over $6,519.87 for the Type R engine, which doesn't include shipping.
For those that maintain there's no replacement for displacement, FCA's Mopar division will travel to SEMA this year to show off its latest 6.2L supercharged V8 create engine. Known as the Hellcrate, the 6.2L, which boasts 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, is that same engine used in FCA's Hellcat products.
"Never before has a supercharged, factory-direct 707-horsepower crate engine kit been offered, and we are proud to be the first to deliver a solution enthusiasts have demanded,” said Pietro Gorlier, Head of Parts and Service (Mopar), FCA. "This ultimate powertrain option fits the needs of owners and fans who demand iconic performance.”
Mopar is a little more lax with its purchase requirements as the engine isn't meant exclusively for track-only race cars. However, the available Hellcrate engine kit is "intended for pre-1976 street and off-road vehicles.”
The Hellcrate engine will carry an MSRP of $19,530. An engine kit is available for $2,195 and includes things like a powertrain control module, oxygen sensors, wiring harness and fuel pump control module.
When purchased as a package, the Hellcrate engine and engine kit carry a Mopar-backed three-year/unlimited mileage warranty.
