Car thieves fancy Dodge Charger, Challenger Hellcat above other vehicles

The high-horsepower cars are more than 5 times more likely to be stolen than an average vehicle.

Car thieves are apparently focusing their efforts on the Dodge Charger HEMI and Hellcat-powered Challenger, according to a Highway Loss Data Institute list of the most stolen cars.

The high-performance duo is more than five times as likely to be stolen than the average vehicle. Interestingly, the Infiniti Q50 is an equally hot item among larcenists, followed by the QX80 SUV and the GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab.

"Somewhat puzzlingly, the car that tops the list of least stolen vehicles is also a midsize luxury sedan, the two-wheel-drive BMW 3 series," the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety wrote in a blog post. "It had just one claim for whole-vehicle theft in 104,901 insured vehicle years."

The Tesla Model S and X were also among the least-stolen vehicles for the 2016-2018 model years.

The report highlights a significant improvement for the Cadillac Escalade, once dominant on the most-stolen list. The IIHS speculates that thieves are deterred by newer Escalade model years that integrate more security features beyond a standard ignition immobilizers.

"Better security features on all vehicles would be the best way to address the problem," says HLDI senior VP Matt Moore.
