Detroit LIVE: 2020 Ford Explorer ST, Hybrid
The ST is the most powerful Explorer ever with 400 horsepower and a top speed of 143 mph.
After revealing the all-new 2020 Explorer at an independent event last week, Ford has detailed the performance-focused ST edition and fuel-sipping hybrid at the Detroit auto show.
Replacing the Explorer Sport, the new ST is the most powerful Explorer ever to leave the factory. Its 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine is projected to deliver 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, expected to push the SUV to a top speed of 143 mph.
The ST stands out from the standard Explorer thanks to a blacked-out grille, unique lower-body panels, and special badging. On the inside, drivers are greeted by a flat-bottom steering wheel and leather bucket seats.
Ford offers two upgrade packages, starting with the ST Street Pack and topping out with the ST Track Pack. Both feature 21-inch wheels, while the latter adds upgraded brakes with red calipers and larger rotors.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the new Explorer Hybrid pairs a 3.3-liter engine with a 1o-speed modular hybrid transmission. The company has not yet confirmed specific mpg ratings, though the rear-wheel-drive variant is expected to cruise for more than 500 miles on a single tank.
The redesigned Explorer will begin arriving in showrooms later this year.
