Chicago LIVE: Ford unveils 2020 Super Duty with more tech, upgraded powertrainsby Drew Johnson
The 2020 Super Duty also receives new exterior styling.
Ford has unveiled a revised version of its F-Series Super Duty pickup truck for the 2020 model year. The 2020 F-Series Super Duty will square off against all-new heavy duty models from Ram and Chevrolet.
The Super Duty's updated powertrain is the big news for 2020. The base engine remains unchanged -- it's still a 6.2L gas V8 -- but an all-new 7.3L gas V8 joins the range for 2020. That new engine boasts features like a forged steel crankshaft, variable valve timing and an oil jet system that keeps the pistons cool under heavy loads.
Super Duty buyers can also opt for a revised version of Ford's 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. For the new model year Ford has strengthened the diesel V8's cylinder heads, added an all-new fuel injection system and redesigned the turbocharger for more horsepower and torque.
All Super Duty models will use a new 10-speed automatic transmission that promises better performance and fuel economy. Despite having four more gears, Ford says the 10-speed is no bigger and only 3.5 pounds heavier than the six-speed auto it replaces.
Ford has not released performance figures for its 2020 Super Duty range.
On the tech front, Ford's 2020 heavy duty models benefit from a new Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, WiFi connectivity and available semi-autonomous tech like lane keep alert and automatic emergency braking.
Ford wrapped its 2020 Super Duty line in revised sheetmetal that includes a new tailgate design, a high-flow front grille and new-look LED headlights. The interior of the Super Duty has been upgraded with new materials and available colors.
The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty will go on sale this fall. Expect detailed specs and pricing information to be announced closer to the truck's market launch.
