Hennessey Mustang reaches 208 mphby Justin King
The HPE750 is claimed to be the first 2015 Mustang to break the 200 mph mark.
Hennessey Performance Engineering has reached 207.9 mph in its new HPE750 Mustang.
The tuner claims to have built the first 2015 Mustang to break the 200 mph mark, thanks to a 2.9-liter supercharger system mounted to the Mustang GT's 5.0-liter V8 powerplant. An upgraded fuel pump, bigger injectors, a new air intake and engine-management recalibration bring the output up to 774 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque.
HPE claims the package is good for a zero-to-60 mph sprint in just 3.4 seconds, and a quarter-mile dash in just under 11 seconds at 133 mph.
The HPE750 is aimed squarely at the Dodge Hellcat offerings, offering quite a few more ponies and nearly as many lb-ft of twist. The Hennessey Mustang's top speed beats the Charger SRT Hellcat by a few mph, but it should be noted that Dodge's official 204.55 mph figure was an average from two up- and down-wind runs.
"It's pretty cool to be able to offer an American muscle car that delivers supercar performance for under $70,000," says HPE founder John Hennessey. Just 500 units will be built, each fetching $69,374 (including the base Mustang GT).
The 207.9 mph run will be featured in an episode of Jay Leno's Garage.
