GMC still considering Jeep Wrangler rival?

The body-on-frame SUV is expected to share the Colorado\'s platform.

General Motors' GMC division is reportedly still considering a new SUV to take on the next-generation Jeep Wrangler.

Unnamed industry insiders have told Automotive News the company is considering a body-on-frame model based on the same platform that underpins the GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado.

Previous reports suggest GM designers are leaning toward a Hummer-inspired style, potentially evoking the Hx concept (pictured) that debuted in 2008 at the Detroit auto show.

Executives are said to have met with dealers last year to gauge interest and get feedback on the idea. The Hx was well received, and many dealers are presumably welcome to new models that could reinvigorate the brand.

GMC has stagnated this year, experiencing a four-percent slide in the first half despite a boom in SUV and crossover sales across the wider market. Jeep sales, meanwhile, have continued skyward with a 17-percent rise through June, nearly doubling the sales volume achieved by GM's upscale truck and SUV marque.

If GM does move forward with its Wrangler fighter, the model is not expected to be ready for showrooms until 2020 at the earliest.
