Jeep reveals Grand Commander in China
The Cherokee\'s platform architecture has been stretched to accommodate three seating rows.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has added a new nameplate to the Jeep lineup, the Grand Commander, to be available as a China exclusive.
Previewed early last year as the Yuntu concept at the Shanghai auto show, the production model appears to stay close to the original idea of a less rugged three-row crossover with seating for seven.
The lengthy 'ute is believed to be built upon an adaptation of the Cherokee's Compact Wide platform architecture, presumably powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, though FCA has not officially confirmed technical details.
The Grand Commander will be built in China via FCA's 50:50 joint venture with Chinese automaker GAC. The latter company has its own plans to launch SUVs in the US market, reportedly with a bit of distribution assistance of FCA.
US buyers are unlikely to see the Grand Commander in local showrooms.
