Lamborghini believes forced induction is the best option for its upcoming SUV

A new report finds the upcoming Urus will be the first regular-production Lamborghini powered by a turbocharged engine.

Speaking to British magazine Autocar, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann allegedly confirmed the Urus' volume engine will be a 4.0-liter V8 mill fitted with a pair of turbochargers. Maurizio Reggiani, the head of Lamborghini's R&D department, provided more insight into why the company turned to forced induction.

"We decided that a turbo for a super sport SUV is the best choice. The engine must be light and powerful and with the capability with this torque at low revs to allow the car to be ‘elastic' in every type of condition," explained the engineer.

While Reggiani stopped short of providing precise technical details, he confirmed the engine will be used exclusively by Lamborghini. His comments also suggest the Urus is being developed to go off the beaten path, and Winklemann added that a two-wheel drive version of the Lambo on stilts will not be offered because it simply wouldn't be authentic.

Finally, as strict CO2 emissions loom, Lamborghini isn't against the idea of introducing a more efficient version of the Urus powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. A gas-electric model isn't currently being developed and it won't be offered at launch, but the Urus is being designed in a way that makes fitting a battery pack a matter of plug and play.

The Lamborghini Urus is scheduled to go on sale in key markets around the globe in late 2018, meaning it will be introduced at a major auto show earlier that year. Although it will be priced into the six digits, Lamborghini believes it can sell about 3,000 examples of the Urus worldwide each year.
