Mazda3 sedan, hatchback earn Top Safety Pick awards

The cars' headlights were not good enough to qualify for Top Safety Pick Plus.

The 2019 Mazda3 hatchback and sedan have both earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The duo aced all of the IIHS crash tests, including driver- and passenger-side small overlap, and earned a 'superior' rating for front crash prevention.

Like many other vehicles from the 2019 model year, the Mazda3 misses out on the Top Safety Pick Plus honor roll due to 'acceptable' headlights that fall short of the performance threshold for TSP+.

"Both the hatchback and sedan earn acceptable ratings for all available headlight options, meaning consumers can expect similar headlight performance on the base models and premium trim lines," the IIHS says.
