Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept tows portable observatory
The telescope is mounted to a stabilized off-road trailer, enabling the pickup to scale mountains in search of clear skies.
Nissan has revealed the Navara Dark Sky Concept at the Hannover Motor Show.
The show truck is equipped with a mobile observatory mounted on a custom off-road trailer. Outriggers deploy to keep the trailer rock solid when the scope is pointed to the sky.
Developed with help from the European Space Agency, the Dark Sky concept aims to resolve the challenge of finding perfect conditions for observing the night sky.
"The Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept allows observations to take place in very remote places, avoiding light pollution, while also transporting telescopes safely and easily," says ESA's senior mission planner for Gaia.
The company has no plans to build the Dark Sky Concept, though anyone with enough cash for a PlaneWave telescope and a custom trailer could build an equivalent rig.
