Nissan Versa Note retiring after 2019 model year

It's not getting a replacement.

Confirming an earlier rumor, Nissan announced it will deep-six the Versa Note after the 2020 model year. The company will not replace the model in the United States.

The news hardly comes as a surprise. The Versa Note is an aging car that competes in a segment of the American market that's shrinking. Website CarsDirect reported Versa sales dropped by 29 percent in 2018. The Kicks -- which replaced the Juke -- is about $3,000 more expensive than the Versa Note, but it's what buyers in the market for a relatively affordable hatchback are more likely to drive home in.

Buyers who want to put one of the last examples of the Versa Note in their driveway need to act fast. CarsDirect learned there are less than 300 cars in dealer inventories across America, meaning the model is nearly sold out.

While the hatchback is dead, at least in the United States, the Versa sedan will carry on. The current car is seriously beginning to show its age, but Nissan will unveil a brand-new model during a music festival taking place on April 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The choice of venue is unusual, to say the least, especially considering the concert is taking place the week before the 2019 New York auto show. Sales will begin in time for the 2020 model year.
