New Toyota Avalon joins Top Safety Pick Plus honor rollby Justin King
The redesigned sedan received top marks all around, except in the passenger side small-overlap test.
The 2019 Toyota Avalon has earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The redesigned sedan earned top marks in all crashworthiness tests, aside from an 'acceptable' rating in the passenger-side small-overlap scenario.
"The structure held up well, but the dummy's head barely contacted the front airbag before sliding off," the IIHS noted.
Toyota has been praised for making front-crash prevention technology a standard feature in the new Avalon. The system avoided collisions at 12 mph and 25 mph.
The Avalon Limited and Touring trims feature LED projector headlights that earn a top rating, despite exhibiting some low-beam glare for drivers of oncoming vehicles. The LED reflectors on the cheaper XSE and XLE trims earned a 'poor' rating due to "mostly inadequate visibility."
The new Avalon is currently the only TSP+ winner in the IIHS' large cars group.
