Volkswagen announces more crossovers

Volkswagen isn\'t forgetting its sedans, either.

Volkswagen of America's plans for the future include -- you guessed it -- more crossovers and SUVs. Executives speaking at a recent media event shed valuable insight into what the brand's American division has in store for the coming years.

Officially, Volkswagen will expand its line-up with two brand-new crossovers. The first will be a five-seater positioned below the Atlas, according to Autoblog. It will stand out with a coupe-like roof line. That sounds a lot like the I.D. Crozz concept (pictured), which was recently confirmed for production, but we believe it will be a completely different vehicle that will not be electric.

The second model will be markedly more mainstream. Volkswagen will introduce a model positioned below the second-generation Tiguan as its entry-level crossover. The variant we get here has seven seats and a long wheelbase; the version sold in Europe has five seats and a short wheelbase. It sounds like Volkswagen will design a brand-new model rather than attempt selling both Tiguan variants side by side in its American showrooms.

Selling the T-Roc here has been ruled out due to its size and cost. And, we still don't know what the future holds for the Touareg, which recently departed Volkswagen's American line-up. The second-generation model might not make it to our shores.

The crossovers are tentatively scheduled to make their debut between 2019 and 2021. They'll join a refreshed line-up of sedans that will include the next-generation Jetta and its GLI derivative, the Passat GT, and the replacement for the current Passat, which will be designed for and built in America.
