Beijing LIVE: Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept
The NMC previews a Jetta-based four-door coupe.
Volkswagen has pulled the sheet off of a new concept dubbed New Midsize Coupe (NMC) at the Beijing Motor Show.
Penned by Volkswagen design chief Klaus Bischoff, the NMC hints at what a four-door coupe version of the Jetta that would slot under the Passat-sized CC could look like. It features an angular look inspired by Volkswagen's current design language, a low, sloping roofline and large 20-inch alloy wheels tucked under flared wheel arches.
The concept's precise dimensions have not been revealed the Volkswagen says it is wider than a Passat yet shorter than a Jetta.
Inside, the NMC boasts a straight-forward cockpit with a simple dashboard, an uncluttered center console and an instrument cluster made up of easy-to-read analog gauges. The coupe presumably offers space for up to four passengers and their gear.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine that sends 220 horsepower to the front wheels via a dual-clutch DSG transmission. The NMC concept is capable of accelerating from zero to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 152 mph.
Volkswagen has not commented on what the future holds for the NMC. We wouldn't be surprised to see a toned-down production-bound version of it unveiled either at next October's Paris Motor Show or at next year's edition of the Geneva Motor Show.
