Paris LIVE: 2015 Volkswagen Polo GTIby Ronan Glon
The updated Polo GTI gains a new look, more power and a six-speed manual transmission.
Volkswagen has detailed the performance-focused Polo GTI at the Paris Motor Show.
Based on the Polo hatchback, the updated Polo GTI gains a brand new 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 189 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque. The GTI reaches 62 mph from a stop in 6.7 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than before - and it goes on to a top speed of 148 mph.
Confirming earlier rumors, the updated Polo GTI gains a six-speed manual transmission. The outgoing model's quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch unit is carried over with only minor modifications.
Visually, the Polo gets a new look that falls in line with the larger Golf GTI thanks to styling cues like honeycomb inserts in the radiator grille, a large air dam and a thin strip of red trim that runs from headlight to headlight. Large multi-spoke alloy wheels and two chromed exhaust pipes wrap up the sporty look.
The updates continue inside with sport seats upholstered in plaid cloth, red accent stitching on the steering wheel and a GTI-specific instrument cluster. The Polo GTI can be ordered with a 6.5-inch touch screen that runs the infotainment system.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI will go on sale across Europe before the end of the year. Pricing information will be published in the weeks leading up to its on-sale date.
