2018 Volvo S60 Cross Country
The limited-edition Volvo S60 Cross Country accurately illustrates the term "niche model.” As its name implies, it is essentially a more rugged variant of the S60 sedan that gains the same suspension and visual upgrades as the V60 Cross Country.
Overview
Exclusively available in Osmium Grey Metallic, the Cross Country immediately stands out from the S60 on which it is based thanks to a ground clearance that has been raised by 2.6 inches. It also benefits from honeycomb inserts in the grille, skid plates on both ends, gloss black mirror caps, side scuff plates and black plastic trim over the wheel arches. It rides on model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped by tall-profile all-season tires.
The lifted suspension does more than simply give the S60 a crossover-ized look. The Cross Country is fairly capable off the beaten path thanks to a generous 7.9 inches of ground clearance and it also rides better than the regular S60, especially on rough roads.
Life aboard
The cockpit is standard S60 fare. With room for up to five passengers, it features an premium-feeling cabin that puts a big emphasis on comfort and ergonomics. It is equipped with an elegant and innovative floating center console that frees up space for a small storage bin that's concealed behind the climate control buttons.
The Cross Country comes standard with a dash-mounted seven-inch color touch screen that runs Volvo's Sensus infotainment system. Sensus groups the car's connectivity and entertainment and navigation into a single easy-to-use unit that can also be controlled with buttons and voice command. The screen also displays images transmitted by the rear-view camera, and gives the driver access to a host of menus that provide vital information about the car.
The Cross Country also boasts a high-definition thin-film transistor (TFT) screen in the instrument cluster. It can be configured to provide vital information about the car and its surroundings.
The S60 offers 12 cubic feet of trunk space with the rear seats left up. Carrying long items such as skis is a breeze thanks to a pass-through integrated into the rear arm rest.
Under the hood
The Cross Country is exclusively available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It spins all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and Volvo's time-tested all-wheel drive system.
Trim level breakdown
The S60 Cross Country is a monospec model, meaning it's only available in a single trim level. The long list of standard features includes Homelink transceiver, a keyless ignition, adaptive cruise control, dual xenon headlights, puddle lights, a power moonroof, heated and power-retractable door mirrors, a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, a multi-function steering wheel, dual-zone A/C, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, a 650-watt sound system with 12 speakers, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation.
The list of optional features includes 19-inch alloys, speed-sensitive steering, heated front seats, and wood trim in the cabin.
Buyers can also choose from two option packages. Called Climate package, the first one bundles heated front and rear seats, a heated windshield, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield washer nozzles and an interior air quality system.
The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) package adds a blind spot information system, rear cross traffic alert, parking sensors up front, and Volvo's Lane Change Merge Aid technology.
Occupant safety
The S60 Cross Country comes with dual front, front side and side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems. Standard electronic driving aids include pedestrian and cyclist detection, a lane departure warning system and City Safety pre-collision warning system, which triggers the brakes if an impending collision is detected.
Key competitors
Halfway between a sedan and a crossover, the Volvo S60 Cross Country has no true competitors. However, buyers can compare it to compact crossovers like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and the BMW X3, and the sedan on stilts can also be cross-shopped with Volvo's own V60 Cross Country.
Buyers who want to put a S60 Cross Country in their garage need to act fast because only 500 examples will be sold in the United States this year.
