BMW has quietly announced plans to expand its portfolio of electric vehicles with at least two new models.
Technical details are few and far between because both models are still at the embryonic stage of development. An electric X3 is self-explanatory, but the electric MINI is a little more enigmatic. It’s too early to tell whether it will simply be a Hardtop with an electric motor, a new model, or even a standalone model.
Previous rumors indicate the 126-inch long Rocketman concept could be resurrected as MINI’s first-ever series-produced electric model. It’s too small to launch with a gasoline engine, but electric motors are much more compact than internal combustion engines.
Buyers who want to put an electric MINI in their garage will need to be patient. BMW executives told Reuters on the sidelines of the Paris Auto Show that the model is at least three years away, meaning we’ll likely see it as a 2020 model. A time frame for when we can expect the battery-powered X3 hasn’t been announced yet.

Exciting news! 🚗 Can’t wait to see what the electric X3 will look like!
Finally, an electric MINI! But will it have the same iconic design?
I’m skeptical. Will BMW really be able to compete with Tesla?
Thank you for the update! Looking forward to more details on the electric X3. 😊
Hope they include a longer range than the current competitors.
What took BMW so long to get into the electric game? 🤔
Does anyone know if the electric MINI will have all-wheel drive?
