These specifications aim to cater to a range of vehicle sizes, from smaller B- and C-segment models to larger D-segment cars and commercial vehicles.
Importantly, the C15 engine allows for flexibility in installation, as it can be fitted horizontally or vertically, and positioned at either the front or rear of the vehicle. This adaptability is crucial for converting native battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platforms into range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) without extensive modifications. The engine’s ability to run on multiple fuel types, including gasoline, ethanol, methanol, and synthetic fuels, further enhances its appeal as a versatile solution for extending the range of electric vehicles.

In addition to the C15 engine, Horse Powertrain is advancing its hybrid technology portfolio with the introduction of its “Future Hybrid System.” This system is a comprehensive hybrid powertrain that replaces a BEV’s front electric drive unit with an integrated engine, transmission, motor, and power electronics. Two configurations are being showcased: the “Performance” variant with a P1 + P3 motor layout and the “Ultra-Compact” P2 layout. Both configurations are built around a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and include a dedicated hybrid transmission.
The Future Hybrid System is designed to provide significant space savings, with a potential reduction in front overhang by up to 150 mm compared to conventional hybrid layouts. This compactness allows for the retention of essential front-end components, such as HVAC systems, which might otherwise require more space. The architecture also facilitates the creation of all-wheel-drive REEVs by pairing the front module with a rear P4 motor. According to Ingo Scholten, the system’s compact size makes it possible to fit a full hybrid package into spaces originally designed for electric drive units.

Horse Powertrain is set to unveil the C15 series at the IAA Mobility 2025 event in Munich. This platform will allow the company to showcase its strategy for hybridization, emphasizing the ease of integrating drop-in range-extender modules like the C15 into existing BEV architectures. The aim is to enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expand their product offerings with minimal re-engineering, focusing instead on design, software, and full electrification.
As CEO Matias Giannini articulated, the goal is to provide a “frictionless way” for automakers to broaden their line-ups. Looking ahead, Horse Powertrain is exploring the development of a three-cylinder variant of its hybrid systems, which could further reduce the compactness of its offerings by an additional 70 mm. The company’s commitment to innovative fuel solutions is evident in the Future Hybrid System’s support for various fuel types, including gasoline, E85 ethanol, M100 methanol, and synthetic fuels. With a target market introduction set for 2027, these advancements underscore Horse Powertrain’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of hybrid technology.
