Raser, known for outfitting the Hummer H3 with plug-in hybrid powertrains, has voiced interest in the iconic brand currently set to be completely terminated by GM. Raser Technologies unveiled a 100 mpg plug-in hybrid Hummer H3 at the SAE World Congress last year, and is currently attempting to purchase aspects of the Hummer brand from GM – but GM has rejected Raser’s bid.
According to Fox News, Raser Technologies, which gained notoriety after providing California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with a plug-in hybrid H3 Hummer, has said that it is still seeking to buy key technologies from GM to make Hummer-based plug-in hybrids.
GM has already officially committed to completely shutting the brand down, following the termination of the bid by Tengzhong. GM also specifically said that it will continue shut the brand down, despite Raser’s interest, citing to The Atlantic that it had concerns with Raser being capable of servicing the warranty obligations of the brand.
Also possibly playing a role in GM’s hesitation to sell Hummer technology to Raser, Raser’s electric Hummer H3 boasts ranges on par, or even besting the much smaller Chevrolet Volt by utilizing the same range-extending hybrid configuration. This includes a 40-mile pure electric range in the SUV, along with a maximum range of 360 miles.
The Raser-developed drivetrain also increases the zero-to-60 acceleration time from 9.5 seconds to just 8.8 seconds, and maintains a top speed over 100 miles per hour. To achieve these numbers, Raser utilizes its Series PHEV drive system, which combines a plug-in electric drive system with a 2.2-liter EcoTech gas engine.
According to a source that spoke with The Car Connection, Raser is interested in the current Hummer H3, which it would adapt to become a plug-in hybrid for sale by 2013. Raser also reportedly has interest in the H2, as well as the new and more compact H5 sport-utility vehicle. Raser’s bid also reportedly explains that it desires to turn the Hummer brand into a successful symbol of American renewal and innovation.
Raser believes it could achieve a mid-thirties EPA-rated highway fuel economy for its electric version of the Hummer H3.
