Spied: 2016 Fiat Toro pickup

Primarily designed for the Latin American market, the Toro could be based on the Jeep Renegade.

Low-resolution spy shots taken in a factory in Brazil have given us the best look yet at the upcoming 2016 Fiat Toro.

The images confirm the Toro gets a rugged-looking design with a tall front end that’s characterized by slim headlights and a wide hexagonal grille. A Fiat emblem flanked by thin pieces of chrome trim is the only visual link between the Toro and the more cutesy members of the Italian company’s lineup. However, careful observers will notice the truck shares a few styling cues with the FCC4 concept that debuted last year.

Surprisingly, the back end of the Toro gets tall barn doors in lieu of a more traditional tailgate, a setup last seen on the ill-fated Lincoln Blackwood. Sleek tail lamps that stretch well into the quarter panels add a stylish touch to the otherwise utilitarian look, and the Toro’s back end also earns the honor of wearing one of the largest Fiat emblems ever seen on a production vehicle.

Official technical details aren’t available yet. While earlier reports claimed the Toro was based on the Mitsubishi Triton, Brazilian media outlets are now reporting the truck shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade. If that’s the case, buyers will be asked to choose from a gasoline-burning 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated at 138 horsepower and a 2.0-liter MultiJet four-cylinder turbodiesel tuned to make 170 ponies.

The Fiat Toro will be officially unveiled later this year, and it will go on sale in select Latin American nations shortly after. It might be offered in Europe next year, but at the time of writing Fiat is not planning on taking on the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins and the Toyota Tacoma in the United States. Similarly, Jeep is not expected to get its own version of the Toro.
