Detroit LIVE: Chrysler 700C previews next-gen vans

Chrysler quietly unveiled a swoopy and rakish minivan concept dubbed 700C today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The unexpected debut gives us a hint about what to expect from the next-generation version of the automaker’s minivans, which are set for a full overhaul in the next couple of years.

More information on the 700C should become available tomorrow, when Chrysler holds a full press conference, but for now the automaker has decided to simply tease this new three-row concept.

Clearly, the design language in the 700C concept draws heavily from Lancia’s team in Italy. Look closely and you’ll see a wide stance and pronounced rear haunches, both of which are derivative of the Italian brand’s Delta hatchback.

Although the Delta isn’t bound for North America – despite the fact that Chrysler briefly showed it off here in Detroit a couple of years ago – it is sold alongside other Chrysler-engineered vehicles in Europe. Under Fiat, Chrysler division and Lancia have been recast as close cousins that design models for specific markets.

Up front, the 700C features a sculpted Chrysler badge integrated into a beak-like fascia not unlike that used on the 200 sedan. Its C badging would indicate performance – like the 300C flagship sedan – but Chrysler is remaining mum on just what powertrain is under the glossy black hood.
